Giosetta Fioroni

Born in 1932 in Rome, Italy. Lives and works in Rome, Italy. Fioroni attends the Academy of Fine Arts and meets Toti Scialoja, who will become a very important figure in her future as an artist. She is one of the few female members of the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo, a group of artists who emerge in Rome during the 1960s around the famous Galleria La Tartaruga, and include Franco Angeli, Mario Schifano, Tano Festa, Francesco Lo Savio, Fabio Mauri and Giuseppe Uncini. In 1957 Emilio Vedova presents her first solo show at the Galleria Montenapoleone in Milan. Fioroni has numerous exhibitions at La Tartaruga throughout the 1960s and 1970s and she participates in landmark group exhibitions such as Nuove Tendenze in Italia at Galleria del Naviglio, Milan, Italy (1966); and Vitalità del negativo nell’arte italiana 1960/70 at Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome, Italy. Other important solo shows include Galerie Breteau, Paris, France (1963); Galleria del Naviglio, Milan, Italy (1965, 1967, 1969, 1971); Modern Art Agency, Naples, Italy (1968); Galleria Il Punto, Turin, Italy (1970); and Galleria de’ Foscherai, Bologna, Italy (1974). In 1972, a large scale retrospective is installed at Centro Attività Visivi del Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara, Italy. Fioroni participates to Venice Biennale in 1956 and 1964, and she is assigned a personal room at the 1993 Venice Biennale. In March 2003, the city of Rome dedicates her a large retrospective, entitled La Beltà, opere dal 1963 al 2003, is held at the Museo dei Mercarti di Traiano, curated by Daniela Lancioni and Federica Pirani. In March 2004, the Centro Studi Arte Contemporanea of Parma organises a detailed retrospective from the 1960s onwards, curated by Gloria Bianchino. In 2013 she has her first North American solo show at The Drawing Center in New York, Giosetta Fioroni: L’Argento, which later travels to Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome. In 2015 the Centre Pompidou of Paris acquires one of her silver years work, a painting of the 1960s Argenti series entitled Gli Occhiali (The Glasses). During that same year, Milan-based MarcoRossi artecontemporanea organises the solo exhibition Frammenti d’Argento con apparizione. In December 2015, the Naples MADRE Museum presents, in one of its rooms, the exhibition I teatrini-presepi (PuppetTheatres- Nativity Scenes), curated by Marco Meneguzzo and Pietro Mascitti. In May 2017, she is invited to participate to the section Frieze Projects program at Frieze New York 2017 with her performance La Spia Ottica curated by Cecilia Alemani and she also takes part of the group exhibition TV 70 : Francesco Vezzoli guarda la Rai at Fondazione Prada in Milan. In September 2017, she exhibits Giosetta Fioroni. Roma anni 60’ at MMOMA – Moscow Museum of Modern Art.
